I’m Sherry Laskin Kennedy, born and raised in Chicago (Go Cubs!) and sometime around an early mid-life crisis I became a cruise and travel writer. Now I’m also a blogger, photographer, storyteller and podcaster. I gave up flying in 1995 and decided to be an advocate for travel without flying. My mission now is to entertain, inspire and encourage readers and fellow travelers to experience the joys of slow travel.
For the last 10 years, I’ve spent nearly two months each year aboard river ships in Europe and the USA. While I love the big cruise ships and all that they have to offer, I’m passionate about the unique experience of river cruising.
My yearly adventures in Europe requires two transatlantic crossings, usually aboard the Queen Mary 2. Getting around Europe finds me on and off trains all across the continent. The same goes for the USA. Here, Amtrak is my cross-country transportation.
My other website,
When I’m not traveling or writing, I’m usually in the kitchen honing my skills at French cuisine and good old American comfort food.
How it all began
I’ve been in love with cruising for over five decades. As a very small child, I crossed the Pacific with my parents from Los Angeles to Honolulu aboard the 18,000-ton SS Matsonia. Fast forward one-half century and since 2007, at least three months every year are spent aboard cruise ships and river ships taking detailed notes and thousands of photos. On land, there are hotels and trains journeys to review, urban cities and small towns to explore along the way.
I started Cruise Maven in 2001 and launched my cruise and travel site, CruiseMaven.com in 2007. My articles and photos have appeared in many travel industry and consumer print publications such as:
- Travel Trade
- Travel Weekly
- Travel and Leisure News
- Senior Scene Magazine
- Porthole Magazine
- Frommer’s Guide to the Greek Islands
Online media includes among others:
- Huffington Post
- Travel Market Report
- AOL Style
My articles were featured in the in-stateroom books for:
- Cunard Line
- Holland America Line
I’ve been quoted in frommers.com, msnbc.today.com, NY Times, Miami Herald, Wall Street Journal and the Sun-Sentinel to name a few. I’ve also been a featured guest on Frommers Travel Radio Show, JiggyJaguar.com, Paul Lasley’s OnTravel Radio Show and CruiseRadio.net and the Weekend Travel Show.
A committed non-flyer since 1995, I have traversed most of the world without setting foot on an airplane. My “If there’s a port I can get there” commitment has taken me over 2,000 miles on the Amazon River to Manaus-Brazil, St. Petersburg-Russia, Carthage-Tunisia and over 12,000 miles back and forth on the Danube, Main, Rhine and Mosel rivers from Bulgaria to Amsterdam; the Black Sea to the North Sea. European travel means two transatlantic crossings, of which I’ve done over two dozen times. To explore the heartland of Europe, I travel on rivers and rails.
